for floors with carpeting, try this:
first locate the floor joists; usually 16" on center apart; to locate by trial & error method: get a long screw 4" or so long with only the last 1/2 or so being threaded; if you can't find one to buy, you can manually file/grind a long one to suit your purpose; part the carpet fibers so that you can see the webbing; insert the screw-joist-finder into the webbing and drive it to the top of the carpet face; now reverse your drill/driver ; if the joist-finder does not back-out on its own, you are not "into" a joist; if the joist-finder does back-out on its own, you have driven into a joist. Once you have found the joist (usually about 1 1/2 inches wide), you will want to drive screws through the carpeting into the joist. Suggest you use coarse threaded phillips headed 2 1/2 inch screws. I use Grip Rite Fas'ners, part number 212GS1. First separate the carpet fibers until you are at the webbing; then take a nail set or similar and punch a hole through the webbing; then hand-push the nail set further into the webbing (the nail set is tapered and by pushing it further into JUST the webbing, you will widen the hole to make room for the head of the screw you will be putting through it). Remove the nail set. Now take one of the screws and drive it through the webbing hole into the joist. You will not be able to see any visible signs of repair. The carpet fiber/nap will hide all. Done !

I had the same problem I tried everything but was what worked was a mix of mineral oil mixed with wax and applied liberally over the floor boards that were noisey.I let it soak in and it seemed to work.

I recently watched the This old House Salem project. This was perhaps the best if not one of the top ten shows ever. The couple purchased an old house in Salem Mass There was no place to park and the place needed a roof, walls along with a new floor and windows. Frankly I think the couple built a replica of this poorly designed horror without knocking the place down. Now here is the part that I cannot understand. Why with a parking problem that when the couple proposed a cut through to the back yard the neighbors showed up like the gang at Frankensteins Castle sans ropes and torches but with the same glint in their eyes and saliva flow.
One would think that if you improve your neighborhood everyone would be happy. My suggestion would have been knock down the dump at night when everyone is asleep and build a nice copy of what was there only more attractive and with proper parking.

I remember as a young contractor I was called to a home that was purchased by a romantic couple. The rooms were so far out of plumb that you would be taken by vertigo upon entry there was no insulation and the heat system would roar with almost no effect Overtime I would touch something on the outside it would fall off. When I just touched the gingerbread on the roof it came off entirely. The couple kept saying that this was the home of a ships captain. The second year the husband contracted pneumonia and died, While everyone was at the funeral the house caught fire and burned to the ground. The widow replaced the house with all new materials and was just as ugly as the original.

squeaky floors

Can someone please tell me how to fix squeaky floors. Our house was built in 1976 and has steel/metal beams instead of wooden ones. We have tried going from the basement and hammering wood shimmies between the beam and the floor but that didn't seem to work.
