I did not criticize JFK's pronunciation. But, if memory serves, it was by others. I tend to think it was just his Boston way of speaking. Each section of the country has its own manner. A poor way to judge a candidate.

That you tube video was really interesting. JFK looks so young. And it sounded like he pronounced nuclear ok to me. But I read a NY Times editorial this morning by a professor of psychology at Harvard who wrote a book concerning language who says that alternate pronounciations of nuclear are acceptable and aren't a sign of ignorance. So, I guess that's just one of my little prejudices. Here's the link to the article if you're interested: http://www.nytimes.com/2008/10/04/opinion/04pinker.html?em There's one particular paragraph in it that hits the nail on the head for me: "The impression fits with the overall theme that Ms. Palin and Senator John McCain have been trying to advance: that expertise is overrated, homespun sincerity is better than sophistication, conviction is more important than analysis. " It's not just Palin and McCain though. It's a theme that's been running through our politics for some time now and it bothers me. I feel that it's dangerous. I know a LOT of "Joe six-packs." My entire family consists of them. My dad's brought down a deer every year I can remember since my birth. My uncle hunts elk. Beer is considered an essential nutrient to most members of my family. They're all genuine, down-to-earth, hard working, intelligent, educated people and I love them, but I sure as heck wouldn't want to trust any of them with international diplomacy, stopping terrorism or fixing the nation's economy. I worry about the dumbing down of the nation.

I had never heard that about JFK. It turns out youtube has his Missile Crisis speech on file. 36 seconds into the speech he says nuclear, so if you're interested you can hear for yourself. While I was there I listened to JFK's inaugural speech and it made me realize how far we've come as a nation. We have a lot to be proud of. The concerns back then were racism and an arms race with Russia. -- -Jill

I'm insulted by the idea that some people out there seem to think we all want to be governed by people who can't or won't pronounce the word "nuclear" correctly Who are those terrible people who are insulting you? Didn't some people ridicule the way JFK pronounced nuclear?

I tried to watch the debate, but it just made me nervous. Maybe they pronounce it that way where she's from, and she tried to say it the right way, but didn't 100%. Still, let's not vote for her. (Fun)

Nu-cu-lar. Except a couple times she pronounced it correctly: nu-clee-ar. Which makes me wonder if somebody's telling her to say it wrong on purpose.

She might have plenty of stuff worth saying. A whole lot of people do. I just haven't seen anything that leads me to believe she's qualified to be Vice President or possibly even President of the United States. And one of the great things about the United States is that we're all SUPPOSED to be able to air our views. Of course, anyone who's spent any time at all on these boards knows that a completely arbitrary and capricious hand censors whatever it is that rubs it the wrong way. But the A&E Boards never claimed to be a Democracy. I'm insulted by the idea that some people out there seem to think we all want to be governed by people who can't or won't pronounce the word "nuclear" correctly.

The whole thread on Sarah Palin disappeared Perhaps because there seemed so much malice towards a woman whom most people know little about. Because you don't like the way a person speaks does not mean they have nothing worth saying.

I guess no politics allowed? (the PALIN WINS!!!!!! post is still there though). I question the moderator's judgement. apathfinder, I was having trouble with an ad on the right of the screen too. It kept opening up into my posting space when I wrote. I don't see it today. -- -Jill

Jill, I just posted (an hour or so ago) entitled Life is Good and it's gone, too. I said I was bothered by the Cheerio boxes on the right of the screen!
