My brother-in-law is a police officer and while riding with him he explained to me that officers (in and near his precinct) don't wear seatbelts while on normal patrol, but if they get a priority 1 or 2 call (lights and siren) they will wear them until they are about to stop.
He said that he doesn't wear it on normal patrol so that he can do "jump outs" where he pulls up next to a suspicious vehicle (in a parking lot, alley, etc.) and he can get out of his patrol car and up to them before they can cover up whatever they may have been doing.
Also, I think that the bottom line is whatever that particular department standard is. Perhaps Jefferson Parish/ Tampa departments don't require it. But that's my opinion, not fact.

Police offiers are not above the law, in fact they should be setting a good example for the public that they serve, by wearing their seat belts at all times when their vehicle is in motion.

The laws of physics apply to all of us, and so do the traffic laws of the state. Every US state has a seat belt law that requires drivers to wear them, regardless of their type of employment.

How can a Police officer drive with out a seat belt, and then write up someone else for doing the same thing ?

Can you say "double standard " ?

Police officers are, and should be , held to a higher standard than the rest of the population.

why would they put that up as a featured post thats simply false. If the officer gets into an accident and has no seat belt on the insurance is invalid. Its clearly an insurance regulation and repetition.

Yeah, I have been on two departments in Indiana and we have to wear our seat belts. However, if we are just seconds from a call, we are allowed to take them off just in case we have to get out running or for Officer Safety.

Most Police Officers don't wear there seat belt because of Officer safety. If you wear your seat belt its one more thing that gets in your way of getting out of your patrol car. If you sit there trying to get your seat belt off and someone has a gun; your going to get shot.

I noticed that the officers and rookies are not wearing seat belts in their police vehicles. Is this an accepted practice??? It's Florida Law to "Click it or Ticket" so why don't the police officers do it? I could see when they're in a big hurry to get out of their cars that the seat belt might get in the way, but aren't they at a greater risk for getting in car accidents?

Absolutely!! I'm glad I'm not the only one who caught that. I am a corrections officer and I practically wear my gloves for the whole shift. And I make sure I buy new ones often.

Officer Safety

Officer safety isn't just about getting shot or stabbed. On one episode of the show... a rookie is seen checking a known prostitute for warrants. While working the computer in his car, he has his pen in his mouth. Someone needs to tell these rookies that their pens over time will have nasty critters living on them. NEVER STICK A PEN IN YOUR MOUTH ON THIS JOB! Whenever dealing with any body fluids, latex gloves should be worn. Also, carry antibacterial wipes and hand cleaner at all times and try to keep your hands away from your eyes, nose and mouth. The last thing you want to do is contract an infectious disease... God forbid you bring it home to your family.
