I say let's get the November/Thanksgiving selection settled. After all, the Poirots are short stories and therefore quick reads, and we have a list to guide us to the next one.

Or should we select a Thanksgiving themed book or movie for Nov? Or just stick to the Calendar Club pick?

Looking at it that way, pghfan, that would be a good connection to the title.

I like the explanation where the aunt would collect double for the same item--once from Mr. Wood and once from the insurance company.

I thought about that. Was it that not only were the minis stolen but then the American got ripped off when they were bought by him? Two sins. Dunno.

What a good question, snoops! Would it have something to do with the fact that the aunt not only intended to defraud Mr. Wood, but was also corrupting her niece by bringing her into the conspiracy? Or maybe it's just because auntie intended to collect 'twice' on the same merchandise. I'll be interested to see what answers you get from our clever PIs.

Which begets the question exactly what was the "double" sin?

Thanks for confirming my guess on the timeline, Clewie. It is amazing the variations in titles of some of the stories--this was one I hadn't heard of before. Certainly accurate but Double Sin certainly sounds snappier and more likely to catch a potential reader's eye.

Never too late, Barbara. We go on as long as anyone has anything to say. And we always enjoy hearing it,

I have just-accidently-come across the Double Sin video. Am I too late for the discussion?

Finally read the short story (twice - I didn't get much out of it the first time!), and watched the DVD....two very different versions, as others have noted. I appreciate pghfan's observations about the switch from Poirot to Hastings needing the "rest", and was puzzled over the big to-do on the DVD over Poirot's threats to retire....though that did make more sense of having the Japp lecture tour in there, with the nice comments he makes about HP (still, not a bit of it was in the story!). In answer to Marty's trivia question: I believe the stranger that Poirot meant to help was the American who bought the miniatures....by "outing" Mary and her Aunt, the Yank was assured of getting his miniatures back. And I think pghfan also hit on the real issue regarding their disposition (had the thieves not been caught) - which is that he bought STOLEN goods. It's unfortunate for a buyer in such instances, but I believe the property goes back to the original rightful owner. I liked that in both the book and DVD, it was ironic that Hastings and (to a lesser extent) Poirot were duped at first into trusting little Mary, when they were the ones lecturing her about taking up with strangers! I thought the DVD was easier to follow than the book, and yet it left out a few things that were important in the story....like the visit to the "Speedy car" (bus) station in the beginning, where Poirot's interest is drawn to the young guy with the flimsy mustache because he sees that Mary is interested in him (big clue, but totally missing in the DVD). Conversely, I thought the story was weak in its resolution, with only Poirot guessing/suspecting that the Aunt had a con game going on. I liked the DVD's meeting @ the hotel better, with her gaffe over recognizing the American, and he her.

Good time line, pgh! I googled "Double Sin", and found that its first US publication was in a mystery magazine in 1929, so it had to have been published in Britain sometime before that. In the US magazine, it was published under the title "By Road or Rail". I've never understood why so many of Christie's works were renamed for their publication in this country. Usually, IMO, the original title was better.

I'm not too sure the date Double Sin was written. It may have been from the 20's when Miss M was not yet established.
