I agree with holdingpattern. The insinuation of it representing how easy it was to get into a females underwear bothers me more than the panties themselves. I really wish that they would of used something else to alleviate stress or have the underwear represent something totally different. I can understand why Sgt. Mason was offended.

DJJ1962-I agree with the "picking your battles" take on things. As I have gotten older my motto has become "Don't sweat the small stuff" I'm adhering to it pretty much unless it involves my children.......then look out, cause here comes the Momma lion-LOL The article of clothing didn't bother me as much as the "easy" insinuation that went along with it. As a person of color who has more than likely had to deal with unfair stereotyping at one time or another in his life, I am especially disappointed in Lt. Armstrong for promoting any kind of stereotyping in the workplace (if he in fact did so). I can't imagine taking on the Memphis PD in court. I would not be up for the mental, physical and emotional drain it is going to put on Sgt. Mason, but if she is, good luck to her. If she ever sees actual monetary compensation from the case, I hope she uses it wisely for a good cause. I guess we all have to do what we can be at peace with each night when our head hits the pillow.

Thank you Holdingpattern, and Thank you for that Kind compliment about my Family, Bless you! If someone had pass a pair of undies to me at work, not sure what I would do? I might see if they would fit me LOL... Gosh I don't know.. My views on life and issues and BS, differ from subject to subject but I do know that with my past and I had had a lot of heartaches and going through a personal Heartache as i am writing this.. Therefore I pick my battles in life and speak up only when necessary. Maybe it is due to my reserves that I have? Not sure.. I don't judge the lawsuit, I just know that I would have not gone down that road. I don't know what the detectives are doing, my life is so darn full and I have to pick and choose what I want to do on the net.. I do have a myspace, if you guys want to be my friend, just ask me and I will accept.. I do have a goofy personality and I sure hope I don't drive you all nuts... Thanks again Holidingpattern

I hope the daughters of these detectives don't have to face this demeaning behavior with male co-workers in their generation. And if they ever do, I bet it won't seem funny or stress relieving at all to their Fathers who think it great fun to do it now. Every woman is someone's daughter. I have a 23 year old daughter. I shudder to think what her Dad would cook up with his attorney if she called him and told that story.....and of course her big brother would immediately go to her job, punch someone in the face and get arrested for the first time.

I think there's a lot of "sour grapes" and jealousy going on. Let's face it...the other detectives could have also done the same things (creating a MySpace page, have publicity photos, etc.). If they chose not to do that, then that is their problem, not Sgt Mason's. I think the egotistic green monsters are being sore losers. Poor, "tough" detectives.."awww..."

DJJ1962....I love your refreshing take on things! This thread is beginning to take on a soap opera style isn't it?-LOL I found out about the "great panty caper" from a friend in CA. He didn't believe that I actually watch the show. So I said just ask me a question. Of course the first question he asked was way too easy.... who is the popular female detective in Memphis? I knew the answer so he goes on to tell me that he had read something about an EEOC complaint. I thought he was joking at first. But there it was when I looked it up. So then a few days later he e-mails me and says "ok smarty pants...if you know so much about Memphis, who is getting a divorce?". I was like, whoa there, I don't know anything about them personally unless they mention it on the show. Ask me questions about the show not the lives of the people on it. Bottom line was he knew he had to dig deep to come up with a question about Memphis that I couldn't answer because I never miss a Memphis episode. I said you're cheating, that's like me asking you which Dallas (his favorite city) detective has stainless steel appliances in their kitchen. So he still hasn't come up with a FAIR question I can't answer. Try as he may, he won't. I'm a detail person and don't miss much.

This is what is on the net: The First 48’s Star Detective Caroline Mason Has to File Suit! Homicide Detective Caroline Mason, from the hit TV show “The First 48″, has filed a multi-million dollar Federal EEOC sexual harassment lawsuit against the City of Memphis and the Memphis Police Department. Mason claims that for months a pair of size 55 1/2 pink panties have been passed around the homicide office to the detective handling easy cases. The panties represent cases that were as easy to solve as getting into a woman’s panties. Mason I’m told also has pictures of the panties hanging in the office. http://thememphis411.blogspot.com/2008/09/first-48s-...

I must admit I do not pay attention to what the detectives do in their personal life, i don't google them nor do I know of a myspace for them or anything about panties or losing jobs etc etc, To me they are detectives and if they are doing a great job I will speak up and give Kudos and if they are wonderful parents which touches my heart I will speak up about that and give kudos for that... So I must admit.. I am clueless about what tony did with panties and why he got into trouble? Nor do I know about Caroline signing Autographs?? LOL SLap me Later

In regard to the fame going to Sgt. Mason's head, I don't think having been interviewed by the media or having a myspace page is excessive. I think that the fact that she has photos at her desk, for those who would ask for one, to be really thoughtful. I'm sure there have been people, that have stopped by her office just to meet her and she is prepared to have something to sign. She took the time to pay her own money to have photo made for someone who might be a fan. I find that to a class act not, a head trip. I think she gets a lot of hassle because she is a strong female that can take care of herself.

I work for the federal government, and I can guarantee this little good-old-boys' idiocy would have been squelched quickly. These shannigans are something that would have been expected--about 30 years ago! I think the "fame and celebrity" have warped the offending detectives' minds into thinking they don't need to bother with or follow established office decorum and protocol. It's a shame that it is taking a sexual harassment lawsuit to stop it. I think Sgt Caroline Mason is a top-of-the-line homicide detective and she has proven herself and her abilities to do her job well. I'm glad I get to see her on First 48, even the reruns. I'm proud of her that she had the determination to do what she felt was the right thing to do--no easy task when you face certain adversity from "the boys". Good for you, Caroline! The mature employees will still be there respecting you, and the ego-saturated ones will show their true, juvenile side as well.

Lt. Armstrong was said to have started the prank. It's a shame because that all should have known better. According to Larry Godwin, Chief of Police, it all started out as a joke to relieve stress from the job. I'm all for relieving stress, but if someone is offended, then you have to find another way to do so. There are a couple articles about how the detectives don't like her because the fame has gotten to her head (i.e. - she has a myspace page, she has done many magazine and radio interviews and she keeps a stack of 8X10 photo at her desk for her to sign when someone ask for an autograph). Larry Godwin has also made a comment that suggested that was why he pulled the plug on the show. He said something to the effect of they are homicide detectives not celebrities. All of this info is on the web. You guys should look it up....it's rather interesting.

Lt. Armstrong would have to be named in the complaint. He was one of their direct superiors. Whether he joined in the Junior High-ish prank or not, he had the ability and the duty to stop it. He also shared in the responsibility with other superiors for setting the tone of the work atmosphere. The sad part is that he is a hardworking, talented law officer who has sacrificed goodness knows what for his career. Because he more than likely couldn't stand up to peer pressure with the boys at the office over a pair of underwear, his career may now be damaged. All so unnecessary.

I'm not sure of all the people who were involved but they have confirmed that Toney Armstrong's name was mentioned in the complaint.

Mason is awesome. She knows when to back off and play the sweet motherly type..."It's okay, Honey, we all make mistakes..." and other times she cuts them to the bone and makes them confess. She is a genius at what she does.
