The issue isn't so much time travel as to did someone not think it through. When the incapsulated material was sent through the worm hole did they intend to hit the satellite and bring it down or not. The intent was to stop the drilling. But putting that aside, how many ways did they destroy the original. First was all the politics buried in this thing, and president were they trying to mimmick in the movie? Than the whole government conspiracy angle was a joke. I am surprised the little black helicopters didn't come out sooner. And then some rogue cop just happens to kill Nash's source. The ending was a joke. Instead of grabbing his hand to be saved he takes the time to hand him his bag. Then the other doctor jumping in to cut off his right thumb when he had been at the side. I have seen better story lines in Winnie the Pooh (read to my little girl). The the stupid suicide scenes. No reason to put that kind of junk in this thing. There have been several good remakes of movies like Miracle on 34th Street. They change the story slightly but the original idea was completely intact. This remake was a waste of time. Fortunately I used my DVR so I didn't waste 4 hours but only 3.

To Destructus: Forget logic when it comes to time travel, it violates cause-effect. There are a couple of standard ways in science fiction to deal with the resulting paradoxes. One is to create a seperate timeline at the point where the emergence happens, Back to the Future style. The other is that the timeline readjusts itself, forming closed loops, 12 Monkeys style. Not to worry though, it's quite likely that time travel will prove impossible, I've even seen an argument that trying to build such a device would create enough energy to destroy the universe it was built in. As for the movie: I've always been amazed by how closely the original screenplay followed the book. But this version walks all over the plot with big mud-covered boots, then throughs every cliched sci-fi plot device into the mix, barring dark matter and a virtual ride in cyberspace (although I may have missed those due to channel surfing at the ad breaks). Instead of showing a group of dedicated scientists using thoroughness, attention to detail and logic to solve the unknown, we end up with a bunch of idiots arguing over increasingly ridiculous theories only to be handed an answer from the, pause for effect, FUTURE. Not to mention the gov't conspiracy, shudder. Piece of garbage, the original book and movie are far more coherent and well thought out.

"...As it stands, and I didn’t read the book or if it has a sequel but to me this is just going to loop over and over again..." Yup. An incompetent screenwriter (one Robert Schenkkan, to name names) thought he knew better than Michael Crichton and stuffed a temporal paradox cliche in at the end. In more civilized times he would've been stoned in a pit and left as carrion for small creatures. As it stands, A&E execs will look at the advertising dollars made by the project and, if the numbers look good, will probably reward the clown. Showbiz, baby. If you haven't read the San Francisco Chronicle's review yet, do so. Reading it won't get back the four hours of your life wasted on the Andromeda Strain, but it'll at least give you the satisfaction of knowing that others shared your pain.

Didn't everyone notice the Time Loop factor in all of this? I’m not a mathematician but to me this would be the second time that the People from the Future sent the Virus to the past. Think about it. There was no way that they could have known the containment code for storage the first time they sent the virus. Only the second time they sent it could they have known, because the Virus will eventually break out yet again. But there is a problem with this theory. It says to me that it will break out again and the guys from the future are warning where it’s coming from (specifically the storage casing it was placed in at the Space Station). This makes no sense because… In the end the Virus must still have to have an Origin. It is even a moot point to even tell the Audience that it is in the containment Area aboard the Space Station because in the Future the Virus will still... A. Be created in a Lab by someone or a Group B. It is sent to Earth from an Invading Species bent on Destroying Humans and all life. What I’m stating is, the Virus Will break out regardless of it being on the Space Station at the time in the Future. I thought at first that Dr. Charlene Barton would be the deciding factor in preventing the Virus but this isn’t so. These series of events will happen again and again unless there is some divergence in time preventing this from recurring. As it stands, and I didn’t read the book or if it has a sequel but to me this is just going to loop over and over again. The people in the Future will have to tell those in the past who will create the Virus or if Aliens created it and to tell them how to stop it in the Future. I think from the moment they are stopped in the future then the past as well as the Future (Present) will be saved. This might be the only way of stopping the Paradox. On another note: I was wondering did Dr. Tsi Chou really have to immerse his whole body in the Coolant to get to the thumb? To me I think he could have just reached over with just a little effort. Also why so Cryptic from the future if they knew the organization would take it yet again. Kinda lame not to tell them, for so much trouble! Also does it take so much code to make a rotating insignia? It would have saved them alot of trouble and encoding if they just made a static jpeg, lol. This way they would have had more room for actual text.

Did anyone notice that that born and raised Chinese biologist's accent sounded more like a Malibu accent? Or was it Anaheim? My god, at least try to fake a bad accent or something. It was like they didn't even try.

The Andromeda Strain is a story about an ALIEN virus. The Satan Bug is a story about a MAN MADE virus. Both original movies were far better than the political drivel I saw last night.

Ghost Radio, I have no idea what movie you were watching, but to say this movie was well done is an insult to such great movies as "Meet the Stupids," and "Look Who's Talking." (please note the sarcasm). Ridley Scott is beyond doubt one of the greatest directors of all time. Perhaps my favorite movie of all time being his interpretation of Phillip K. Dick's "Do Android Dream of Electric Sheep" aka "Blade Runner." But trying to pass this off as a "good movie" is beyond me. Not only was the acting close to horrid, but I have seen better writing in daytime Soap Operas. I don't want to sound all high and mighty but I cannot fathom anyone believing this to be anything other than one of the worst movies ever made. Not only was it poorly written and acted, it wasn't even all that entertaining. And while I consider myself to be fairly liberal and on the left of things, even I was offended by the political tripe that poured onto the screen as if they were trying to make some sort of grand political commentary while using bad cliches used by the X-files (and done much better) 10 years ago. Certainly the chief goal of any form of entertainment should be first and foremost to be entertaining and getting hyper technical only emphasizes a person's bias; that being said there was so little good going for this movie you could have forced me to watch episodes of He-Haw and I would have been more entertained, at least that show tried to be funny.

jrwillard is correct! This movie did suck! Political statements abound in this crappy movie. I can not believe AE wasted 4 hours of my precious time. I thought this movie would have some similarities to the older/classic version, but no luck. There was terrible special effects and political agenda pandering everywhere. Why didn't they develop the science and how they tracked down the crystal form, like the older movie did? I guess there was just too many political (PC) statements to make and not enough time to develop characters and work ethic of the scientists of old. Where was the stinkin' laser beams that tracked down escaped lab animals?!?!? This was really pathetic.

This movie sucked! Science fiction, once a great form of fun escapism has been hi-jacked by political hacks looking for another soapbox from which to peddle their petty agendas, and this is no exception. It has every anti-American cliché known to modern media from conspiracies about the gulf war to government hit men. The number of technical mistakes is far too numerous to mention them all in short bulletin board post, but here are just a few. When the scientists arrive at the town to remove the satellite they make a big show about how heavy it is, but it made almost no crater when it landed. I guess the laws of inertia don’t apply in that part of the country. The F-16 fighter has only one way to deliver a nuclear device, and it is NOT a missile. The F-16 Block 50/52, which the nuclear capable variant, could only deliver a nuclear device via the B61 bomb which looks nothing like the weapon that was wheeled past the waiting pilot, a weapon more like a hellfire missile (it clearly had a camera in it’s nose). And where were the great 3-D views of the plane in flight coming from? It was a single with no wingman. One last thing about the plane - no way it flies low and slow enough to parallel a low flying chopper – it would stall and crash. Not to mention the geometry of the satellite itself – completely wrong for anything designed for flight in space; or the whole idea of a singularity opening, remaining for years and then closing within the confines of solar system without disrupting the orbital paths of any planets. Everyone associated with this project should be ashamed. This was nothing more than agenda-drive tripe clinging to the coat tails of a great story and masquerading as science fiction. The science has more in common with the Greek mythology and the fiction just a vehicle to peddle a jaded view of the U.S. I will not be watching the second half and will tell everyone who will listen not to watch either. Trash, the whole thing was nothing but trash!

. Oh c'mon ya buncha whiners.. it looks like your losing focus here... lets look at this objectively shall we..? it's a movie.. with the core desire of the ppl who produced it to have it be as entertaining as possible.. after all.. thats motion pictures right..? ok.. moving forward.. Sure, it's a re-telling of a story/movie with the same name... but thats where similarities end.. Indeed the 1st movie was a classic... as this new one will no doubt be, Both films hosting a cast that augmented the story by totally falling into their characters...transparently I may add.. just as this new cast does, all world class actors in their own right... in both films. Understanding that allows one to understand why this movie was worth a 2nd shot... and this one has earned the right to carry the Title "Andromeda Strain" in my opinion. Kudos to the hundreds it took to pull it all together, especially Ridley Scott and his team, always been a huge fan of Aliens... that was a movie way ahead of it's time as well... very well done to Ridley and crew.. Thanks A&E you rock for always pushing the envelope on what real cool television should be.. TruTV take note.. awww that was cheep.. :p Looking forward to part 2 tonight.. Regards from New York.. Rod

Paula: The original was scary. I will watch the new one too. USA Today didn't think too highly to the new one but I usually don't pay that much attention to critics anyway. What they don't like, I usually end up liking. The problem I have with remakes is that already knowing the story, I end up bored as hard as I try not too and give it a fair chance.
