With her folk-pop atmospheric sound Sarah McLachlan has shown the world her amazing talent as a musician and songwriter, continually redefining herself and emerging as a major voice in the growing adult alternative pop format. Now, after selling over 40 million records worldwide, this eight-time Juno Award winner and a three-time Grammy Award winner has a eagerly awaited new album.
McLachlan was born in Halifax, Nova Scotia, where she took vocal training in addition to classical piano and guitar lessons as a child. After a year of art training at the Nova Scotia School of Design, while fronting a new wave band, October Game, Nettwerk Records approached her for a solo deal. She initially turned it down in favor of continued studies, but took them up on the offer in late 1987 and relocated to Vancouver.
Her debut album, 1988's Touch, reached gold status in Canada and was reissued worldwide in 1989. In 1991, she followed up with her second album Solace, an impressive collection that showed her maturity and her focus as a musician especially in her hit singles “Into the Fire” and “The Path of Thorns (Terms)”.
In September 1992, McLachlan traveled to Cambodia and Thailand for work on a Canadian-sponsored documentary on poverty and child prostitution, World Vision. Inspired by her experiences, she retreated to a secluded house outside of Montreal to write material for her next album. After six months in a Montreal studio with collaborator/producer Pierre Marchand, her third album Fumbling Toward Ecstasy, was released in late 1993.
“Possession”, the single from the album, broke the Top 20 and received considerable airplay, especially on modern rock radio, where it reached number 4. “Good Enough” also found a home in that format, reaching number 16. In 1997, McLachlan released her fourth album, the enormously successful Surfacing, which debuted at number two on the pop albums chart and contained two Grammy Award-winning tracks, as "Building a Mystery" won for Best Female Pop Vocal, and "Last Dance" was voted Best Pop Instrumental. That same year, she founded and starred in the pioneering Lilith Fair Tour, which featured a diverse group of talented female singer-songwriters and musicians. In acknowledgement of her efforts for the Lilith Tour, it's no surprise that in 1998 McLachlan was awarded the Elizabeth Cady Stanton Visionary Award for advancing the careers of women in music.
1999's quadruple-platinum Mirrorball, and its platinum long-form video counterpart, were both culled from that year's Lilith Fair tour, and spun off Sarah's third Grammy-winning performance, as "I Will Remember You" won for Best Female Pop Vocal. The 5 times platinum Afterglow followed in 2003, and received a Grammy nomination for Best Pop Vocal Album, while its opening track, "Fallen" was nominated for Best Female Pop Vocal.
