I am not opposed to punishing young offenders. If they are capable of offending then they are certainly capable of doing the time. IMO the problem is that these incidents continue to be on the rise. Trying these kids as adults does not make a huge difference, as minors in prison would not be exposed to the general population. Nor should they be. Maybe we should be looking for measures that would prevent these incidents. Removing them from society after committing crimes does not revoke the action. The victims continue to suffer. No amount of jail time served will ever take away the pain or fear experienced by victims, but it is obvious that this mentality is not working. Prevention and early intervention attempts would serve society better than lockin people up and throwin away the key.

I think it is appropriate to have tried these 13 year olds as juveniles, but due to the seriousness of their crimes, the sentencing should have been handled differently. Instead of letting them out at their 18th birthdays, the state should have re-evaluated them and perhaps given them more time or at the very least lifetime parole with the boys being forced to pay restitution, under go counseling and other measures.
The problem with juvenile sentencing, in my opinion, is the one size fits all mindset. Judges, probation departments and the police ought to be able to impose additional consequences for juvenile offenders for these type of offenses, rather than throw the book at all juvenile offenders.
I teach teenagers (15-18 year olds) and there are enormous differences among them. While they all know the difference between right and wrong, their impulse controls are different, and some are more moral than others.
I do not support determinate sentences for any offender, juvenile or adult. It should be left up to the judges, who are elected. If the public doesn't like the way they sentence, they can fire them come election time.

The Juvenile court system is autrocious and unfair! These two teens bragged about the snipings on the internet and amongst their friends. They set the fire alarm off at the middle school and when the students and teachers came out into the parking lot, they picked them off with sniper rifles they got from a grandfather who had them locked up. For this cold blooded murder they got to stay in a country club (juvenile detention, not prison) and when they were 18, they were released free citizens with this incident expunged from their record. What a miscarraige of justice!
